Lilacs are Simply Luscious

Southeast Idaho is littered with lilacs.  They pop out each spring, right around my Grandmother's birthday.  They bloom with abandon  along the roadsides, in overgrown vacant lots, next to tumbled down barns and abandoned creaky farm houses.
I imagine burlap wrapped bundles of lilac roots lovingly carried long distances, planted in hopes of surviving this inhospitable climate.  What cheer they must have been to all the farm wives living amidst miles and miles of brown and grey--sagebrush, empty spud fields, log cabins and wind.  To witness the first heart shaped emerald leaves and the splendor of bloom and fragrance that follows must have given many the strength for the days and work ahead.

A fresh armload--sink load--of deep purple lilac

Each year I take time to celebrate lilacs and this link to the past by creating a very special bouquet in my Grandmother's Roseville pottery vase.  She grew up in comparative luxury, but her mother raised her first child in a "soddie"--a home made of layers of sod, dirt floor, dirt walls, no windows, lots of spiders, mice and the occasional rattle snake!

Thanks Gram, for all the good stuff.

Fresh Cuts: June 3

I brought in an armful of flowers to arrange in my grandmother's vase.  Here is a bit of a tease, please check in tomorrow for the full post.

It is the last day of May and we are in over our heads--literally!

RT cutting viburnum "Lace Cap"

East Fields
If you are following me you will recognize this shot of the east fields--just compare the growth from the photo last week.  The bells of Ireland actually look like little bell seedlings.

West Fields
The sunflower seedlings also resemble themselves.

These are peony plants.  Look carefully and to see their heads forming.

This is the poppy row, also forming heads.

Fresh Cuts: May 27

Come walk with me...

The little barn
Yesterday was a perfect farm day--the forecast, sunny but cool with light winds--meant that I could work all day without bumping up against strong winds and too much heat.  Taking advantage of the extra time I took a long walk around the farm with Gracie, the fat cat, and my camera.

The west fields

The east fields
Now I realize this is not a "gorgeous" farm shot, but I wanted to show you the potential.  The multicolored little green sprouts are many of the annual varieties you love--snap dragons, matricaria, Queen Anne's lace, nigella and so on.  The yellow-green rows at the top of the photo are grasses and to the top left of the photo are some of the perennials--delphinium, ascelepias, monarda and yarrow.  The last row on the far right is a future crop of helebores.  I will take photographs of these fields each week so you too can witness the progress.

Every day we are harvesting new varieties of perennials--we are updating the availability list each day!  At the moment we have:

Allium

Cerinthe

Columbine
